Supply Chain & Logistics
Velocity Without Compromise

ELIMINATE MANUAL INTERVENTION IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN WITH HIGH-SPEED RFID VERIFICATION.

The Chaos of the 'Last 100 Feet'

The modern supply chain is a miracle of efficiency until it hits the dock door. This is the 'Black Hole' of logistics. Warehouses and Distribution Centers (DCs) process millions of items, but the frantic pace of inbound and outbound loading often leads to critical errors. A single mixed-pallet error can trigger a chain reaction of chargebacks, reverse logistics costs, and stockouts at the retail destination.

Manual scanning is the bottleneck. It requires line-of-sight. It requires a human to stop, aim, and shoot. In a high-volume cross-docking facility, there is simply no time to scan every carton. So, operators approximate. They scan the pallet label and *assume* the contents are correct. They aren't.

Furthermore, Returnable Transport Items (RTIs)—the plastic totes, cages, and pallets that carry these goods—are bleeding out of the system. Companies lose millions annually simply buying the same plastic containers over and over again because they have no visibility into where they end up.

Key Pain Points

!

Shipping Accuracy

The industry average for shipping accuracy hovers around 95-97%. That 3% error rate equates to millions of dollars in penalties and corrective actions. You pay to ship it there, you pay to ship it back, and you pay the fine.

!

Cross-Docking Paralysis

To verify a breakdown pallet, it must be staged, de-stacked, scanned, and re-stacked. This 'touch' adds labor cost and time, defeating the entire purpose of rapid cross-docking.

!

RTI Shrinkage

Reusable assets are treated as consumables. Without tracking, they are hoarded by downstream partners or discarded, creating a massive, invisible capital leak.

Automated Portal Verification

Automated Portal Verification

Nextwaves transforms the dock door into a data capture node. We install ruggedized RFID portals equipped with high-gain antennas at every ingress and egress point. As a forklift drives through at full speed, the system energizes the tags on the pallet, the cases, and the items inside.

Within milliseconds, the system compares the read event against the Advanced Shipping Notice (ASN) or the Warehouse Management System (WMS) order. It verifies: Is this the right pallet? Does it have the right cases? Is it going to the right truck? Is it leaving at the right time?

If the load is correct, the driver gets a green light. If there is an error—an extra case, a missing item, or the wrong destination—the system triggers a red light and an audible alarm instantly. The error is caught at the source, before it ever leaves the facility.

Why Nextwaves?

  • Hardware-agnostic integration (Impinj, Zebra, Kathrein)
  • Ruggedization (IP67) for dust, heat, and vibration
  • Advanced filtering logic to eliminate cross-dock crosstalk

Technical Architecture

Deep Dive: Multipath & ASN Logic

Reading tags moving at 10mph through a metal dock door is a physics challenge. Metal reflects RF energy, creating 'multipath' interference that can cause null spots (dead zones) or rogue reads (reading a tag from the adjacent dock door).

Nextwaves solves this with 'Phased Array' antennas and sophisticated GPIO triggering. We use motion sensors to wake the reader only when the forklift breaks the plane, and we use directionality algorithms to determine if the tags are moving IN or OUT. If a tag is read but isn't moving with the group (e.g. static on the floor), it is filtered out.

We integrate directly with the ASN (EDI 856). The system doesn't just read IDs; it parses the relational hierarchy (Parent License Plate -> Child Case -> Grandchild Item). If a Child Case is missing from the Parent structure, the system flags a 'Partial Load' anomaly immediately.

Case Study: 3PL & Auto Parts

A major Third-Party Logistics provider handling automotive parts faced severe penalties for mis-shipping parts to assembly plants. Just-in-Sequence (JIS) demands meant one wrong part halted the car line.

The Future: The Dark Warehouse

The future is fully autonomous. We are integrating RFID with Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) and drone swarms for cycle counting high-bay racking. The goal is the 'Dark Warehouse'—a facility that runs 24/7 with zero lighting and zero human presence, managed entirely by the Digital Output of the RFID sensor network.

This requires tagging not just the inventory, but the rack locations, the robots, and the humans themselves to create a synchronized, collision-free ballet of logistics.
